Re: How would you pronounce Emmeline?
Ok... obviously my husband is in that less than 1% of people that prefer the pronunciation Emma-Lynn. I prefer Emma-Line, as do many of you....
Well, he now REALLY loves this name (even for a 1st name!). He's always loved Emily and Emma, and loves how Emmeline sounds kind of similar... even though I think the name shares roots with Amelia?
So what do I do now? Original intent was to look for a more unique mn than Elizabeth and now he's falling in love with this Emmeline name (and with a different pronunciation than I would prefer...) Is 'Emma-Lynn' that bad? Sounds really trendy and somewhat made up to me as it doesn't follow the historical classic pronunciation, but then there's also Adeline's and Madeline's that are pronounced with the 'Lynn' ending. He thinks the 'LINE' endings sound too southern. Should we just abandon Emmeline all together? Anyone ever been in a pronunciation battle with their spouse? :) Oh... fyi... he prefers the spelling Emelyn vs. Emmeline as well. Another disagreement. :)

Re: How would you pronounce Emmeline?
I also prefer the Emma-line pronunciation. This is odd, since I pronounce Evangeline Evange-lyn. However, if your husband wants to pronounce it Emma-lyn, the Emelyn spelling makes more sense. You could try Emeline I pronounce this spelling Emma-lyn. Also, what about Emlyn (two syllables, Emm-lyn)?
If you really love Emmeline, you shouldn't abandon it.

Thanks. He said he liked the pronunciation flow of 'Emma-Lyn' Anderson better than 'Emma-Line' Anderson. Not sure the other opinions out there... I just like the classic pronunciation better, but maybe he has a point when combined with our last name Anderson??? As for spelling, I've just never been a fan of spelling names with the 'lyn' ending... like Emeline suggestion though.

Hi Lemon... thanks for the feedback. Came across an old posting of mine (posting... 'Nothing seems to go with Anderson'... and found one of your responses... copied below....

Macy Charlotte Anderson
Melody Blythe Anderson
Like any? Names ending in Y are good...
Other choices that would be good with Anderson are those ending in a T sound, like Charlotte Anderson or Juliet Anderson, or N, such as Vivian Anderson or Emmeline Anderson. Just avoid names ending in A, as these will run into your last name..."
So curious... you suggested that names ending in 'N', i.e. Emmeline, would work great with Anderson... But in this thread, you felt otherwise. You always seem to give such great advice, so maybe just a change of opinion here?

Hi, there!

It isn't a huge deal, not as much of a problem as Emma Anderson, but I don't love it. I stick with my original Y ending solution as the best possible option, but T would be my second. N isn't terrible, but it isn't the best - see what I mean?
I'm sorry for the confusion! Really, I am.
I ALSO RESPONDED WITH SUGGESTIONS ON YOUR OTHER POLL. AGAIN, SORRY!"Names, once they are in common use, quickly become mere sounds, their etymology being buried, like so many of the earth's marvels, beneath the dust of habit." - Salman Rushdie

Re: How would you pronounce Emmeline?
I do too. It just sounds less condensed. (And less trendy.)
