Glad you like my suggestion! Elspeth and Sylvie would be an AMAZING twin set.

    Re: Chloe

I asked him and he said he thinks Elspeth is hard to say. He said, "I have to say it every time? Elspeth. Elspeth. Elspeth." It was funny the way he said it, it doesn't come thru when I type it. Is there a nickname? Though a nickname sort of wrecks it. I do like it, anyway. Maybe I can convince him.

Hmmm. I agree that a nickname would kind of undermine the gorgeousness of Elspeth, especially a generic one like Ellie or Ella. Do you like Elsa as a nickname? That would be adorable with Sylvie.

    Re: Chloe

    Hi there :)
I get what you mean with the 'woodlands/spritely' feel of Sylvie. She's been in my Top 3 names for quite a while now, and I absolutely adore her.
Personally, I think Sylvie & Chloe feel a little too rhymey, as do Sylvie & Ivy (though I too adore Ivy!)

I'm assuming you're American!? Well, in my state of Australia, Chloe was the #3 girls name for 2008, so to me she's too popular! But I guess that doesn't really impact you! Eva sits at #38, with Eve at #68 and Evie at #61 - the difference in popularity intruiges me!

Anyway, here are the names that popped into my head that fit with Sylvie, sorry for the repeats :)

    Sylvie & Cora
    Sylvie & Ophelia
    Sylvie & Adele
    Sylvie & Flora
    Sylvie & Olive
    Sylvie & Matilde
    Sylvie & Iris
    Sylvie & Acacia
    Sylvie & Delia
    Sylvie & Viola
    Sylvie & Josephine
    Sylvie & Anaelle [ah-NAH-elle]
    Sylvie & Lilias
    Sylvie & Cordelia
    Sylvie & Anouk
    Sylvie & Annika
    Sylvie & Alice

    Anything there?

I remember seeing some lovely suggestions thrown around by pp~!

    Re: Chloe

Thanks for this list. I really do like some of them and have thought of them myself:

Flora -- I love this but my husband says no. His mother is Florence and it's too much like her name. It's a Jewish tradition not to name children after living relatives. I can't argue with that. Though it IS a very different name. Right?

Ophelia -- I love this too! I have loved it for years. Is there too much teasing potential? Feel-ya? Am I prurient? Maybe I'll start a thread about this.

Josephine -- I was thinking this could be the middle name!

Violet -- Not Viola but Violet. I have liked Violet for a long time. If I used this all 3 girls would have a V in their name. Which is nice.

I mentioned to my husband that Elspeth is a Hebrew name, and I think that made him more open to it. What would really make him like it is reading it in a novel. I know there's an Elspeth in an Iris Murdoch (Iris -- my favorite writer -- I am not crazy about the name though -- but I love her books and I also like Sylvia Plath very much!), The Good Apprentice. What other novels have an Elspeth? Before when I was pregnant with Eva, he was against the name Eva until he read an Isabelle Allende book, Eva Luna.

Which by the way -- Luna is nice. I like Anna-Luna. What does anyone think about that?

    Eva, Sylvie and Anna-Luna
    Eva, Sylvie and Elspeth
    Eva, Sylvie and Ophelia
    Eva, Sylvie and Flora
    Eva, Sylvie and Natalia

    What do you think?

By the way I am in a suburb of New York City, and Chloe is around #26 here. It's popular, though I don't know any Chloes. (I don't know that many children though.)

I really like Elspeth, too, and know a lovely Elspeth who went by Els. :-)

Eva, Sylvie and Anna-Luna: While Anna fits with Eva and Sylvie, I think Anna-Luna is too exotic to fit. (Plus, it reminds me of pantaloons, and I'd worry about "looney" jokes.) :-(

Eva, Sylvie and Elspeth: I really like this!

Eva, Sylvie and Ophelia: Like Luna, Ophelia feels too exotic to me to fit with Eva and Sylvie, but that's just me. :-)

Eva, Sylvie and Flora: I really like this combo!

Eva, Sylvie and Natalia: Like Luna and Ophelia, Natalia feels too exotic for me with Eva and Sylvie.

    Eva, Sylvie, and Amelia
    Eva, Sylvie, and Blythe
    Eva, Sylvie, and Beatrix
    Eva, Sylvie, and Bess
    Eva, Sylvie, and Clara
    Eva, Sylvie, and Celeste
    Eva, Sylvie, and Daphne
    Eva, Sylvie, and Esme
    Eva, Sylvie, and Eleanor
    Eva, Sylvie, and Frances
    Eva, Sylvie, and Felicity
    Eva, Sylvie, and Fiona
    Eva, Sylvie, and Helena
    Eva, Sylvie, and Hazel
    Eva, Sylvie, and Isadora
    Eva, Sylvie, and Imogen
    Eva, Sylvie, and Lillian
    Eva, Sylvie, and Maude
    Eva, Sylvie, and Matilda
    Eva, Sylvie, and Rose
    Eva, Sylvie, and Tess
    Eva, Sylvie, and Willa
    Eva, Sylvie, and Winifred
    Eva, Sylvie, and Zelda

(I think Eva is gorgeous!) :-)

    Re: Chloe

I just want to add, that if you love the name Chloe (I think it's gorgeous!), you should totally use it. As you said, you don't know any Chloes, and if you don't think you'll be bothered by coming across the other Chloes that do exist, that's all that matters. I think Eva, Sylvie, and Chloe is great! :-)

The other names on your list aren't super-popular now, but no name is safe from mass popularity. All it takes is one celebrity to use a seldom heard name, and BOOM! Instant popularity.

I'm not expecting now, but if Annabelle becomes even more popular when I do have a baby (which it will), I may use it anyway. I could name my baby Beatrix, Eliza, Genevieve, or Juliet, which are as obscure now as Chloe once was, only to find them at the top of the charts in a matter of years.

I know a 20-year-old female Harper Rose, for example, who can't be too happy that her name is catching on (and that Rose is pandemic as a middle name).

A name's popularity is important to me (and I think it's important to bring up the issue), but there's nothing wrong with the love for the name overriding national rankings. :-)
