Honouring Uncle David.
My grandmother passed away last year. When she was alive she often spoke about her brother David Redfern who was a fisherman. He was 20 when he was Lost at Sea when his fishing boat 'St Romanus' went down in the 60s. He sailed out of the Port of Hull (Kingston Upon Hull). We used to go to the docks to cast flowers out to sea to remember him each year, and still do now to remember them both.
I plan to use Marilla meaning 'Shining Sea' for a girls name, probably in the middle, to honour this heritage and my Grandmother. Her name was Isobel but everyone called her Ella.
I'd like to honour David in someway, but without using the name David, because I have another family member called David and everyone would think it was to honour him.
So far I have thought of:
Sailor (although I do think of it as a girls name)
I think the idea of Romanus. Can anyone suggest any other boys names linked with either deep sea fishing or the sea? I'd be really grateful. Thanks.“And this is Nymphadora-"
"Don't call me Nymphadora, Remus," said the young witch with a shudder. "It's Tonks."
"-Nymphadora Tonks, who prefers to be known by her surname only," finished Lupin.
"So would you if your fool of a mother had called you 'Nymphadora,' " muttered Tonks.”

I think of Meryl /Merrill/ Merle, the name of an elderly relative in my family. According to my Bruce Lansky baby name book, it can mean "shining sea."
And for a fishing reference, I think of St. Andrew, the Biblical disciple of Christ. He and Simon Peter were fishermen by trade. I like that Andrew, Simon, and Peter are all traditional names like David.
How about just Roman, as a simpler form of Romanus?

If for a girl, I think Fern is beautiful and something you could definitely use.
You can also go another route. 'David' means 'beloved,' according to Nameberry. Here are some other names meaning 'beloved', so as to honour Unclde David:
Cara / Kara
Filomena (also Philomena)
Kyra / Kira / Keira
Luke (means "beloved physician" apparently)
Rasmus / Erasmus21-year-old name collectorDreaming of:
Alanna "Lana" Jade • Charlotte Avery • Audrey LioraJames Aro • Henry Maxen • Julian Everett
Other names: Talia, Brighton, Melia, Bay, Arielle, Beckett, Tanner, Asher
