nothing pretentious about it. He'll only use his formal name on formal documents (birth certificate, diplomas, wedding invites, etc.). I've grown up in circles where having a "family name" is a sort of status symbol... You can nickname your son whatever you please, but carrying on tradition is nice.
The fourth generation carrying a name (usually with IV after his name) may be referred to as Ivy or Ives, (as in IV) Quad, Quadry, Fourth, or Dru (as in quadruple), or any number of nicknames unrelated to Simon John (SJ? Jack?)
