Is this name a... natural disaster?

What happens to a perfectly nice name (like Katrina) after it has been assigned to a natural disaster such as a hurricane? I just noticed that Katrina was at the bottom of the Top 1000 names.

Will it ever be usable again? Maybe we should stop giving hurricanes human names. I imagine lots of girls hate having to say "... yes, like the hurricane."

I read that usage of the particular name (like Katrina) drops but that names beginning with the same letter see a spike in the year following the event.

(Sorry, this probably belongs in the Talk About Baby Names section, oh well.)

I'm not sure. Maybe they drop for a while, but once people have forgotten that hurricane, they move on and return to using the name. If I loved the name Katrina, I would use it, even though it has been assigned to a hurricane. Lots and lots of names have been assigned to hurricanes and such. They retire the bad ones names though. These are the pre-approved 2014 Hurricane Names. It was the same list from 2008, except 3 names were changed because they were retired. Gustav became Gonzalo, Ike replaced by Isaias and Paloma became Paulette.

Hmm.. ok that gives me some hope. I really like Katrina.

Can some mod please move this thread if it's better off elsewhere? Thanks!
