    The Supreme Court Judge test

I've seen people talk about the "supreme court judge" test.

I can't speak for US courts, but we have currently, and have always had, a really eclectic and surprising set of names on our benches here in Australia. I thought some of the more unusual ones might interest some of you. One thing I find interesting is the prevalence of what some people would call "nickname" names. I don't know what is on the birth certificates, obviously, but this is how they are recorded on their court websites:

Current Supreme Court judges' first names:

    Marilyn
    Marcia
    Betty
    Kate

    Bernard
    Simon
    Jack
    Lex
    Clyde
    Hartley
    Chris
    Kim

Past Supreme Court judges, and High Court justices' first names:

    Frederick
    Redmond
    Leo
    Wilfred
    Urban
    Clifford
    Hibbert
    Ninian
    Basil
    Isaac
    Hayden
    Dudley
    Garfield
    Cyril
    Harry
    Keith
    Daryl
    Dyson

These are plucked from just a few of our courts.

Wow, that was a long list. I did not have concerns about my son or any future children of mine becoming whatever they want to be but this has really reassured me even more. It also states very clearly that people go by nicknames all their life and use them even in their careers. And even people given misspelled names can get high in their career.

Hmm...our SCOTUS is fairly tame right now:

John, Ruth, Anthony, Antonin, Samuel, Stephen, Elena, Clarence, and Sonia.

    Chief Justices:

John, William, Warren, Earl, Fred, Harlan, Charles, William, Edward, Melville, Morrison, Salmon (the weirdest one of the bunch), Roger, Oliver, John, and John.

Judges I often appear in front of:

Henry, Catherine, Carol, Kenneth, John (x4), Thomas (x3), Raymond (x2), Robin (male), David (x3), Wendy, Martha, Richard, James, William, Roger, and the more unusual Kermit.

As an aside, I use the Supreme Court justice test because it's about the most prestigious position in the world (from this lawyer's perspective) and selecting a name that will fit someone who rises even to that position will surely serve them well no matter what he/she may choose to do. And because law is still an extremely conservative business, employing such a test tends to keep one from pushing too many boundaries with a name that will, of course, be worn by someone else.

It is true that what names we choose for our children is theirs and worn by them their whole life but who is to say what names they will like. Not everyone likes traditional names for example, you give a child one and they might hate it. If we named older children or adults we could ask them what names they liked, let them be a big part of the choosing, but we don't.
