    I knew a guy in college name Beau and he went by Beau Bear as a nn, sometimes just Bear.

    Benno means bear too! You could also do Kodiak, as a species of bear. But I agree with a previous poster, that you can name him whatever you want and just call him Bear. I know lots of moms who refer to their kids as animals--bug, chicken, cricket, monster, etc. Obviously these terms of endearment have no relation to their actual names.
    Current favorites: Olive, Louise/Louisa, Magdalene/Madeline, Phillipa, Talitha, Mallory, Blythe, Eliza, Mercy, Talia; Calvin, Charles, Gideon, Abram, Jude, Reuben, George, Reid, Clark, Holden.
