Does Tate work as nn for Thomas?

Just curious what people think. I like Tate as a nickname, but not a given name. Would Thomas, nn Tate be too much of a stretch?
If you think it is, any other ideas?

With a stretch, may be. I like Toto, Toma/Tomo, Mas...I think Max may work too.

I meant, how to get to Tate through another name (if Thomas wouldn't work), not other nicknames for Thomas. Does that make sense? What are other long-name options to get nn Tate? I don't like Tate as the given name, it's too informal, in my opinion.

I think Tate could work for Thomas. Maybe not as a formal name, but definitely as an informal or family nn.

I can't think of any other traditional names that would really work
    what about?
    Talbot
    Terence
    Livy/Lucy : Geneva/Gwen : Coralie/Alice : Noelle/Eve
    Eli/Bennett : Jude/Zane: Luke/Leo : Levi/Phineas

I think it could work. I think you could get to Tate from Nathanial or Nathan too (though Nate is more obviouse). Others would be Tatum (though it's considered unisex) and Tatius. But really I think alot of T names could work.
