I think Hermione could work on an American girl. The -mione sound isn't instinctive in Mayani (in fact, when I first read it, I thought of mayonnaise.) And Hermione has associations beyond Harry Potter. There was a Hermione in the Shakespeare play The Winters Tale, she was the daughter of Helen and Menelaus, as well as Oscar winning actress Hermione Baddeley.
So my vote goes to Hermione, lol.
    -Athena

I prefer Mayani, but don't dislike Hermione.

I think Hermione would definitely be more recognizable.

    I would definitely choose Hermione.

Mayani isn't a legit first name. Hermione is not only legit, but is also highly recognizable because of the Greek myth, Shakespeare , Harry Potter films/books and the actress Emma Watson. I believe the Harry Potter connection might actually make people more understand of the pronunciation. Mayani will most likely be pronounced like 'May - ah - knee' .
