Poll: Ragnar, Roderick or Riordan, with nicknames
Please vote for your favorite! I love all of them, so if you have time to comment, I'd especially appreciate feedback on these. I realize that nns are not everybody's thing but we like them.
Middle names I have in mind this time are family names Ethan and/or Wade.
Other siblings are C@spian, Zeph@n nn Z, Eve nn Evie, and Per3grine nn Pip.
Ragnar nn Ron - Hubby and I have been loving this one for about a year now. I have Norwegian heritage and I can hardly believe that DH actually got on board with a Scandinavian name. It's also a roundabout a nod to my mom, whose name starts with Ran, and her hero is a Ron. I actually think we would mostly use Ragnar, but Ron is our nn option. I think it's our favorite, but I am afraid it just too "out there." We kind of got burned on our son Zeph@n's name; it's special to us and we thought it was on-trend with the -an ending; but the poor kid is always having to repeat and spell it.
Riordan nn Rio - hubby has liked this one for a couple of years. I was sort of wanting to get away from the N-ending names, but nn Rio is just too fantastic to pass up -- this one definitely made the list because of the nn as far as I'm concerned. Riordan has Irish roots, and my hubby is partly Irish, so add points to the score for that.
Roderick nn Rook - I love this one because the name itself and the nn are equally wonderful (or equally weird?) but so far I haven't gotten hubby on board. I also have German roots so Roderick gets points for representing that side, and Rook seems so medieval and chess-piece and fun and cool.

I voted for Riordan. The nn sold me on it as well. (:

I'm not a fan of Roderick - contains both "Rod" and "Dick." But Rook is exquisite. A stroke of genius.
Ragnar is so beautiful. Snowy and fierce, manly.
Riordan is handsome, but it doesn't honor your heritage in any particular way, right? Seems more.. free-floating to me. I like Rio, but not as much as Rook.
So my suggestion is to find a middle name for Ragnar that will yield Rook:
Ragnar Faruq "fah-ROOK" (gives your husband his Q, an Egyptian name, meaning "he who can tell right from wrong")
Ragnar Nanuq "nah-NOOK" (or Nanook, though the Q is the more authentic Inuit spelling) means "polar bear"

Switching the nns around...just might be brilliant. You might have exploded my mind, too, LOL. I will definitely give it some thought and run it by DH. We have a pattern, though... unusual first name gets a "normal" middle name. I need to ponder this one (can you tell you shattered all of my little boxes I was stuck in!).
Deleting Ron would get rid of part of the nod to my mom, though on the other hand I don't know if she likes the name in the first place, ha.
Riordan doesn't have particular significance for me; hubby is partly Irish so he will like an Irish name, but I don't feel any obligation to go for that since we've used up almost all of his family names as our other kids' middles.
Good new perspective here. Exactly what I was after. Thanks a million!
Also:credit where credit is due. I first saw Rook as a nn for Roderick here: Thoughts on Roderick? I don't know if @alexa400 came up with it or not, but yeah. It's pretty awesome.

I was going to be naughty and vote for both Ragnar and Roderick, especially now that you're pondering the possibility of mixing up the nicknames, but I see you've set it up to accept only one vote apiece So mine went to Ragnar, as it seems to be the one that will work best for both of you. I'm seriously thinking of polling my friends, though, to see what reactions Ragnar gets from a few non-name-nerds. But I do love Rook (and Roderick)--let us know how the pondering plays out!
I like Riordan, by the way (and Rio), it's just that it seems more lightweight for you next to these other two."He telleth the number of the stars; He calleth them all by their names."
