I like Derek, but then again its my brother's name. Most of the Dereks I know are smart and funny. My brother hasn't had too much trouble with the spelling, no more than a john or Jon might have.

Derek is my husband's name. It's not my favorite, but I like it.

It certainly has dropped in popularity, but I don't necessarily think it's dated.

There are a couple of acceptable spellings (ie: Derrick), which can be annoying, but isn't as huge deal.
Margot - Eleanor (Lena) Ivy - Leonie - Camille/a Clare - Margery Wren
    Clark - Gabriel - Simon - Malachy - Locke - Shepherd

    Guilty Pleasures:
    Vesper - Zephyr - Andromeda - Bellatrix - Lúthien
