    Not-Close Namesake Okay?

Despite the fact my family is pretty screwed up and all over the place, I have always loved the idea of using family names for my future children. We are Scottish, Irish, English, German, Greek, very Italian, Polish, etc. so there are alot of really cool names I could choose from! The thing is, again, my family isn't close and there is a huge rift in it and I know that if I were to choose certain names, my mother's side would be highly offended. Case in point, on my dad's side I have and Italian aunt called Valley..I never met her but I would love to use her name as a mn or something..but my mom's side would know and wouldn't take that kindly and it would be awkward to explain to the ones who don't know.

    So...

    1. if you love the name, would you still use it despite family qualms?
    2. if you didn't know the relative..say you want to use your great-great-great-great grandfather's name..is that acceptable to use the name still? would that be too weird to say "i found the name in our family tree and wanted to use it?" especially if you don't know if the person was like abusive or something..

    Just curious!

edit: i suppose my reasons for using family names, with a few exceptions, are family is important to me and also..it could also be a way to justify using some rather ecentric/unusual names that my family would normally scoff at

I think it's fine to pull names from the family tree, unless the person is alive and you don't have a relationship or reason to honour them. If it seems like it could cause problems, you probably shouldn't do it.

I agree with this. I comb my family tree for new options all the time. If anyone ever asks you where you got the name, just say you found it on your family tree and thought it was cool. I doubt anyone would frown upon that. Personally I would want to have another reason for using it, but you certainly don't have to.

Agreed, my family tree can be traced back to the 1300s and there are lots of great names (and some not so great VERY ethnic names ) to choose from but I wouldn't use the names of living relatives because I favor my father's side and I know it would cause some hard feelings for my mom if I honored someone on my father's side without doing the same for her side
