I love it! When I hear "Briar" I think of the character in the "Circle of Magic" children's series by Tamora Pierce--a very tough, cool boy. The name also comes with the nickname "Bri" which I love.

Awesome! I know it's the name of a Disney princess, but that name sounds so much more masculine to me. Bri is such a cute nickname.

I think of Briar Rose aka "Sleeping Beauty" first. But I guess it could work for a boy.

It could work for a boy, but I vastly prefer it on a girl and would assume any Briar I heard about was female unless told otherwise.
