I like Kestrel for a girl.

Kestrel is interesting for a girl in that it is not the typical cutesy Wren/Lark/Dove type of bird name for a girl. It's also less commonly used than Raven, which is the only less songbird-sweet bird name for girls I can think of.

I do prefer to keep Peregrine for the boys.

I LOVE Kestrel. It was on my list of names before I got married and gained a last name that starts with "L". Tragic.
Baby boy due October 2014! Current tentative name:

    Sequoia Orion

When I was a kid I read a "dystopian/futuristic" novel whose main character was a girl called Kestrel. I've loved the name ever since —*and I agree it would work nicely on either gender

Was it the Wind on Fire trilogy? I believe the first book is called The Wind Singer. Those were great books!

I adore Kestrel...long-time cherished guilty pleasure. I see it as perfectly wearable as a middle, and not extraordinarily out there as a first.

Mary Kestrel perhaps, or Kestrel Alice.
