It would be too close for siblings, certainly. Ordinarily, I would say it would be fine since the children would just be cousins (right? I hope I followed that correctly) and one is a first name and one a middle. This specific situation does give me pause, though, since it involves a loved-one who passed. If it seems similar to your sister-in-law and her husband and it caused them pain, that wouldn't be good. Maybe you could bring it up with your sister-in-law?

Sorry if I wasn't completely clear - Having a similar name to my niece's middle name isn't a problem, it's having a similar name to my brother-in-law's sister's name that's more of an issue (since she's passed away).
Thanks everyone for your input! I'll certainly discuss with SIL if Alice becomes one of our likely choices.
