What about Nico Reed? That would be my first pick if you had it on the list.

I think Nico Lennox, Merrick Archer, and Merrick Bodhi all work well... but it's hard to say without knowing the surname.

Btw, I don't know if popularity is important to you at all, but an observation about Nico: There are a lot more Nico's out there than you would imagine by looking at the popularity records. My son is 15 and he has at least 7 friends/classmates/acquaintances named Nicholas/Nicolas. Three of them use Nico as their day-to-day name. This may be peculiar to my area, and there is the 15 year difference between my son and yours, so it might not be relevant to you.
That's interesting, because we use Nico as our son's nickname with the intention of him using it as a daily name if he wants to when he's older and we get compliments on how different it is, how people have never met a Nico before, and we've only run into one other Nico in three years.

Thanks for the opinions everyone! I don't want a "common" name, and so far I've yet to meet another Nico (or Merrick for that matter), but that is one worry that I have about that name. And as far as a the Elephant Man, I'm aware that's his last name, but I really don't think that many people make that association, and I'm not too worried about him going to school or anything and other kids his age making that association as well.
