    Hmm, I rather like it. I agree with wrenmaple, it's unusual, and people will probably always ask for it to be repeated, but the sounds are sounds found in more popular names that make it more approachable.

    Macaire is a MALE saint's name as you've stated so why use it for a girl? I think it's better suited for a boy myself.

    Thanks so much to you all! I haven't quite thrown it out's one of only two names my husband are both still smiling about

    The other name we are considering is an Irish (more Scottish) name...Mairi. My husband thinks it is too similar to Maura (both of our mothers' names).

    Mairi is a really lovely name - does it matter if it similar to your mothers? It does have a different feel to it than Maura though :-)
