    I think Cal is completely usable with Malcolm. We briefly considered Malcolm a while back, and Cal was the NN I was planning with it too.

    I get where you're coming from here but parents do have a say in the child's nn, in my experiance if you have a prefered nn for your child rather than just calling them by their full name you can have some control over unwanted nicknames. People shorten names, so having a prefered nn is a good idea.

    For nn, I think more of Cole than Cal. I guess I attribute Cal to Calvin and the likes...

    I do think Cole is more intuitive. Cal could work, but I think it will only catch on if you use it all the time and introduce him as Cal. If someone were to meet him as a Malcolm, I doubt they would gravitate toward Cal without a big push.
