I like Jack but it's a nickname. It feels fun and boyish, but he might want something a little more mature and professional when he grows up. I really love James, it's so handsome and has several possible nicknames.

    James
Jack is just nn and he'll spend his life saying "No, not John. Just Jack."

I'm not a fan of Jack. IMO it's just slang for John. However, I love James! Very classic, strong and very classy.

Although, Jack has been used with some regularity as a nn for James--maybe you could opt for James nn Jack? That way he'd keep both his favorites, but I don't know if that interests either of you...
This is exactly what I was thinking ...

    James would be my choice.
I like simple yet versatile names that work well for the athlete, the comic, the genius, and the judge.
