I love Alma. Do you know what he doesn't like about it? Is it too short? Or he doesn't like the sound of it? For a similar sounding, longer name, what about Amalia? Or for a different sounding, shorter name, I like the suggestions of Eva, Ava, Ida, Alba, etc.
Mom to Alexander Patrick (11), Madelyn Esther (8), Genevieve Susan (3), and Theodore James (stillborn at 37 weeks on February 3, 2014). Expecting #5 in May 2015.

Boys: Everett, Sebastian, Augustus, Samuel, Abraham, Elias, Julian, Silas, Nicholas, Desmond, Jasper, Ezekiel
Girls: Bridget, Felicity, Elizabeth, Leona, Ophelia, Caroline, Aurelia, Elysia, Callista, Miriam, Isabelle, Delilah

Vote on my long list! http://www.babynames.com/namelist/9844996

he thinks it sounds old, plus there is a very rustic restaurant called like this where we live which doesn't help
Actually funny you mention Amalia. We both like Amalia or Amelia but it's becoming increasingly popular. Unfortunately I have big issues with popular names. Especially in Italy where everyone of a certain age seems to be called the same name. (right now that is Viola, Aurora, Sofia and Nicole) they are not very creative even though they have gorgeous names that haven't been used for ages... We both loved Mia which was not widespread as in US or Uk yet, but since an italian moviestar called her baby like this, it's been rocketing in the charts...

Alma doesn't run that risk yet... i hope!

Oh Alma! Such a perfect name. Calm, feminine but not at all fussy or frilly, dignified. What's your boyfriend's naming style? Has he made a list? Maybe finding a middle name that delights him or honors someone close to him would make him feel better about Alma.

Others from various styles that have a similar feeling:
