Thread: Bethany Hildegarde
May 18th, 2013 03:17 PM #1
In the time since my last thread about Hildegarde, I have realized I could never use it as a first name. Ever. Not even on this hypothetical girl who seems to have come into existence with the name! But as a middle? Who knows... How often are middle names used? Not a lot, so I started playing around with cool first names for Hildegarde. I came up with a lot, none (in my opinion) are 'clunky cool' like Hildegarde, but they sound good with it. My favorite is Bethany Hildegarde, what do you think? The others include:
Isabeau Hildegarde (guilty pleasure!)
Vivienne Hildegarde (spelling?)
But I keep coming back to Bethany! Do you have any opinions, suggestions?

I like Bethany, and I even like crazy old Hildegarde (in the middle spot) but together they don't thrill me.
To offset Hil, I'd go with something German, but lighter:
Helena Hildegarde (ooh fun!)
Margrit Hildegarde or Margarethe Hildegarde
Eleanore Hildegarde (very symmetrical, with the L, R, and E ending)
Elisabeth Hildegarde (Elisabeth can make a silk purse out of a sow's ear, and you could give her the German nn Liesl.)
Greta Hildegarde or Margareta Hildegarde
Flora Hildegarde (so old-fashioned and sweet)
Or something German and not so light:

Isobel, Isabeau, Azalea & Acacia are my favorites with Hildegarde. Bethany doesn't do it for me with Hildegarde. For me it pairs best with names with a lot of glamor and sparkle. Bethany is more of a quiet beauty to me.

Anais Hildegarde and Sofia Hildegarde sound best to me - they're equally quirky-'European' as Hildegarde, but are glamorous and light-hearted enough to even out it's clunky factor. They sound like old-Hollywood stars or something.
These have a similar feel -

I'm definitely not psyched about Bethany Hildegarde. Together it's rather boring and doesn't match in style. I'd have to agree with previous posters that Hildegarde needs to be paired with something that has more spark, preferably something with a light and pretty sound.
My favourites from your list:
