What do you think of Wes?

Does it need to just be a nickname or could it work as the full name?

Wes looks and sounds incomplete to me. West would work as a full name, but personally I would only use Wes as a nickname for Wesley, Weston, etc.

I would use a full name (Wesley, Wellesley, Weston, Westley) just for the versatility factor. A boy can revert back to his full name when he matures. I would be afraid that if you just named hime Wes he may end up being called "wuss".
    All the best,

I think it should be used as a nickname only...
