    Well, that's because it is phonetic Layla is the closest English translation of the Arabic letters. One of which is a 'y'.

    What you spelled out above (Lee-la) is Lila = German for purple.

    Thus...(being German/American) I'd prefer Layla.

    My sister's name is Leila, so I am biased toward this spelling. Her name is pronounced 'lay-luh' and as far as I know she's never had much trouble with people mispronouncing her name. I'm sure some people have said lie-luh, but I dont think it has ever bothered her much to correct them. She loves the uniqueness of it
