If you're open to less common names, Cathan is an Irish boys name that sounds alike to Katherine/Catherine.

What about Thane? It's interesting and a bit unusual. Or Kane, which is cool but maybe a bit more controversial.

There's also Aaron with a very similar sound to the second syllable.

    Eli/Solomon : Luke/Zane: Levi/Phineas
    Due in January!

My thought was Lion. Or maybe even Leo. A fairly common nn for Katherine is Kat (at least, I'm hearing it everywhere lately! Much more often than Kate, Katie, Kit/Kitty, or any of the other options!), and cat to lion makes a nice transition, imo. I think Cathan, Thane, and Aaron are lovely alternatives, too, though. Maybe you could use initials?
