    I'd spell it May and I wouldn't worry about the month thing because it's a mn.
    I think the connection to your husbands grandmother is much more important and such a beautiful reason for choosing the spelling that everything else pales in comparison to me. But, Mae is beautiful too.

    I would keep the original spelling of May. It's not cheesy to me; May is too well established as a given name.

    My oldest daughter's middle name is June, she was named after my Grandma who was born in June, and my daughter was also born in June. It's only awkward when I mention her birthday, because she goes by her first and middle name together, so saying for example Jillian May's birthday is May 3rd, does feel a little bit silly and obvious, but it's not something that would have swayed me from using a family name.
