Thread: Lets Retake From the Girls!
July 21st, 2013 03:08 PM #61
My post might get pretty long :P
Here are names I’ve seen on boys IRL, some more often than girls.
Ashley – I’ve met 2 male Ashley’s both smart and masculine.
Whitney – He looks like a quarterback with dreads. I’ve never met a female Whtney
Shannon – lots of these at school
Brittney – He goes by Britt
Aubrey – dashing French man I know
Harper – I’ve never actually met a female Harper, My friend Harper (twin Whistler) is a boy
Jade – Never met a female Jade, but I know a male Jade and there was a Jade on So You Think You Can Dance
Angel – I’m one of the only female Angel’s I know
Bailey – surprisingly, I’ve known several male Bailey’s and only one female
Willow – Aside from Persephone’s middle. I’ve never met a girl Willow. I know 2 boy Willow’s now though and neither use a nickname.
Shiloh -- never met a girl Shiloh but I have met several boys
Winter -- Several boys but only one girl
Sage -- several boys but no girls
Quinn -- never met a girl Quinn
Lark -- I've actually known several male Larks
Rain/Raine -- never met a girl Rain
Kohana -- this is both a Hawaiian girl name meaning "resembling a fragile flower" and a Sioux boy name meaning "swift"
Seren -- I've actually known a few male Serens but no girls
Gale -- never met a girl one
Noel -- pronounced no-el. I've never met a girl Noel and never met a boy with it pronounced nole.
Names that need to go back to the boys or could be boys names:
Monroe -- never understood this on a girl
Marlowe -- same as Monroe. Marlowe just makes me think of the playwright
Tempest -- saw someone say "this is a girls name" but why? Why is it a girl name? I've never heard that >.>
Isidore -- It sounds like Isidora and I'm just hoping the girls don't take this one
Jane -- On Firefly there was a male Jayne and I thought it was terribly handsome
Adair -- I don't get why this is a girl name at all
Romilly -- it's got a cool sound I think would work fine on a boy
Isabeau -- since it's French, it should mean something to do with handsome, but in any case, it's much more masculine sounding
Nicola -- I just think of Tesla but it doesn't even have a boys entry here
Poe -- never understood why this was a girls name
Remy -- !!!
Names listed on Nameberry as girls names that shouldn't be there (in my opinion and no offense to anyone with these names or children with them):
Aster -- It's a flower, sure, but it doesn't sound feminine at all
Austen/Austin -- I don't know how Austen is "more girly" than Austin just because it's Jane Austen's surname
Asa -- It's a biblical male name they say "may work better on girls"
August -- yes it's a month, but it's traditionally male too
Auberon -- O_O "fresh and viable"
Barry -- "no sign of revival" in the boys "innovative" for the girls
Blaine -- They say it "sounds feminine" but I love it
Bradley -- "sounds fresher for a girl" sigh
Blaise -- Ah man, Blaise Pascal is all I think of
Brennan -- I adore this for boys but they say "soft enough to borrow from the boys" *sad*
Corin -- Shakespearean male name "easily adapted for girls"
Carlisle -- "equally used on girls and boys" In the last decade it hasn't even been in the top 100 though
Chauncey -- adore for a boy
Douglas -- O_o
Darren -- "works better for girls"
Everett -- "prime crossover candidate"
Flynn -- "there's no reason it couldn't work for girls"
Gene -- girls already have Jean
Howard -- O_o
Hyacinth -- It isn't even listed as a male name even though Hyacinth was one of Apollo's male lovers.
James -- "James for a girl? Well, why not?"
Joey -- For the boys, it doesn't even have an entry, for the girls, it's called sexy. "Tousle-haired and freckled, yet sexy in the way many boys' names are when used for girls. "
Loki -- O_O Just cause he was a girl a few times in the myth, doesn't make it a girls name
Lawrence/Laurence -- "We approve of this name for a girl" In the boys entry it says "Great option, though, for girls."
Mercury -- he was a GOD
Neptune -- he was also a GOD
Oberon -- *sad* He was a king...
Orion -- He was a hunter in Greek mythology...I hate seeing the names of my religion cross over (either direction) as much as anyone else
Pallas -- while it was part of Pallas Athena's name, she took it from a male Titan. He was the Titan of warcraft
Royce -- "make up your mind, Roy or Reece" on the boys but "a good way to honor Roy and Joyce" on the girls
Seth -- "perfect candidate for crossing over to the female camp. "
Sheldon -- "how to name your daughter Shelly today" for girls "about as far out as you can get" for boys
Vernon -- How is it this for girls "Much more upscale and modern for a girl than a boy." but this for boys "conjures up gas pumps, tractors, and hot blacktop"
Zephyr -- GOD of the west wind. Girls already get Zephyrine and Zephyra, they don't need this oneMother, Hellenic Pagan Priestess, and Resident Greek name expert ^_^ Call me Dantea or Remy
