A suggestion that popped into my head is Calla. I know you said you wanted to avoid the -a ending, but Calla sounds so good with Rowan to me. Also calla lily fits with nature. Probably not your style, but just wanted to throw it out there.
I love Sage too but it feels almost... cliche? I dunno. Like it's expected or something.

I do love Calla and have considered it, but my husband thinks it's too "Gummi Bears" and he just can't get over the image.

    Hmm...
I dislike Sawyer on a girl, I find the name unattractive for females to harsh and masculine. Whereas I do like Wren, which is a simple rural sounding name. Wren looks attractive I also like how Rowan sounds with Wren even though they do feel slightly similar they have the same feel and work.
    Suggestions:
    Lilias & Rowan Jane
    Ashley & Rowan Jane
    Tatum & Rowan Jane
    Willow & Rowan Jane
    Shiloh & Rowan Jane
    Taylor & Rowan Jane
    Waverley & Rowan Jane
    Sage & Rowan Jane

Wow! This thread is full of awesome ideas!! What about another unisex name with a link to a tree in the meaning. I see that Waverly has already been mentioned. I would echo that and add Everly and Oakley. Maybe Lennox too?

Oh and I wanted to add that I quite like Sawyer for a girl or boy. I think it's really fresh and spunky. It has a lot of energy!
