Ok, so for a singer... lets see, I really like Loreena Mckennitt... She has a Celtic background, so I could honor her with a Celtic name. I can use her initials, or I can look at her songs and pick something that way. For example she sings The Bonni Swans, and Bonni Portmore, so Bonnie could be a fun way to honor her.

Say I love Mandy Moore... she has done some acting, I could use one of the characters names... like Lana or Jaime.

You use other forms of the names as well. Loreena could be Laura, or Lauren, McKennitt maybe Mckayla... Mandy could be Amanda, Moore could be Moira.

You can also see if your singer has children of their own and name after their child. Imitation they say, is the sincerest form of flattery.

I think I would use their middle name or variation of their first name. For example, I like No Doubt. Let's see... Gwen Stefani could be Gwendolyn, Gwyneth, Genevieve...Winifred, Wendy. Or Stephanie, Stephania.
You can easily use the titles of the songs - almost every group has a song with names. Or use your favourite male singer's name feminization. Blake - Blakely, Ryan - Raina, Paul - Paulina, Alan - Alaina.
If you don't want to use their names, songs and maybe their alter-ego's/movie character names are good idea IMO.

I would go with instruments, where they're from, the name of an album/song, etc

    Some of my favorites:
Fender- a lot of guitarists play Fender Stratocasters
    Gibson- another guitar
    Lucille- BB King's guitar
Haze- Jimi Hendrix's Purple Haze album
Blaise- Bob Marley's Catch A Fire album
    Kingston- Bob Marley, again
    Shiah- Cat Coore's son
Zephyr- Red Hot Chili Peppers' The Zephyr Song
    Hollis- hometown of RunDMC

    For country music
    Beale
    Memphis
    Georgia- Ray Charles
Blue- can represent a ton of things/people. I think of Patsy Cline or Blue Suede Shoes
    Ryman

    Fox * Shea * Jade * Azure * Eden * Greer * Arden
    Lotus * Tallulah * Noor * Jasper * Blaise * Linden
