    Kamal or Kamaal?

My husband and I met at a concert headlining A Tribe Called Quest, one of his favorite groups, whose lead member's real name is Kamaal. He is extremely picky about names, but he really likes this one. I like the sound too, but I prefer the spelling Kamal, as I think Kamaal is too suggestive of the name's Islam origin (we're christian) and too ethnically specific sounding for a white, jamaican-and-haitian-american kid. What do you think? Is "Kamaal" appropriate sounding for us or should we stick with the safer spelling? (if we use the name at all)

Is it supposed to be pronounced like Jamal but with a K? I immediately think of camels when I see the name.

I prefer the Kamal spelling over Kamaal, since the extra "a" doesn't add anything to the pronunciation. I actually like Kemal (which surprisingly doesn't have a nameberry entry) the best, although that may be going too far from the original namesake for you and your husband.
