    Alida --lovely no?

One of my colleagues interviewed a woman who turned 106 today (one of those community news stories celebrating a senior's special birthday) Her name is Alida. Nameberry says it's latin for "Noble" It was totally new to me and I love it so I thought I'd throw it out to the forum too in case it was new to others.

I like it. I like a lot of the Al- girls' names. My user name is a name I found on an old tombstone that struck me as cool, though not one I'd ever give to a child. Alida sounds a bit exotic, with a Spanish or Italian feel to it, at least to me.

I too write for a small community newspaper, and just two weeks ago did an interview with a man who just turned 100! His name was Raymond, with a sister Alverna who died when she was only 18, and another sister whom I THOUGHT he called something like "Ellroe" but I can't figure out what he actually said.

I wholeheartedly agree with you - Alida is lovely! It's also elegant and romantic with a touch of European exotic flair. An undiscovered gem!
    All the best,

I just found this name in an old social register and fell in loves with it! It is soft, yet rhythmic and melodic, under used yet easy to spell and pronounce. Pretty much a great name!
Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns. ~George Eliot

I love the name Alida, but my husband thinks it would sound funny saying I'm Alida (sounding like i'm a leader).

YES! Alida is one of those uncommon, but uncomplicated gems that are a delightful surprise. One of the joys in genealogy research is finding names like Alida im a family tree full of Mary, Anna, Catherine, etc. Not that those names are perfectly fine, but those slightly unusual names give a little insight into how much creativity was lurking in the branches.

I know a girl named Elida, pronounced almost the same way, but never Alida. I like it!
