    Opinions on Demelza

I've asked about Demelza on other forums and the nicest thing anyone has said about it is 'I don't hate it' and 'at least it's not made up'. Consensus seems to be that it sounds like a Disney villain. But I'm thinking people here might be a bit more open-minded about it...is it really that bad? Do you think it's useable?

People are extremely open minded here to be sure, but I just don't care for this and really don't see it as useable.
On middle names: There's no point to them.
On picking kid's names for nicknames: Just name the kid the nickname in the first place if you're that set on ever using it.
Someone with a difficult name thought on giving out "unique" names: Please stop and think how your kid's life will be growing up with a really difficult/awkward moniker.

I can get on board with Demelza! I think it's quirky and interesting and would make a really cool choice. Demi? Ellie? Mel? A ton of great nickname options! In the end, it's not one I would personally use, but I would be very delighted to meet one.

Ironically when you mentioned a the Disney thing..........first thing I thought of when I saw it was Cruella de Vil. It does have that same ring to it.

I think it sounds like a harsh Eastern European name, so depending on your ethnic background I suppose it could work.

It's actually Cornish, and DH and I both have British Isles heritage. The nickname I love with it is Demi. I love Demetria with the nickname Demi as well but DH has vetoed that one.

I think that it is usable, I just don't think that it is a very pretty name.

Well, it's not my favorite, but when I read in the profile that someone named the heroine of their book series Demelza I could totally see her: a quirky but confident girl.
    Names I enjoy:

    Girls: Lucy, Elena, Lake, Sylvie

    Boys: Jack, Eamon, Sylvan, Theo

It reminds me of names like Dorcas and Bertha and Gladys. It just feels exceptionally old fashioned.
I personally don't like it, but it's not horrific.

I love Demelza! I've never considered it unusable at all, but maybe it depends on where you are. Here in the UK I actually know a Demelza, plus the hugely successful Poldark books/series has made it much more familiar. It has great nn options (I love Elza the best, I think), a great literary reference, and - in my opinion - a beautiful sound. Also, it's the name of a hamlet in beautiful Cornwall.
