I'm going to have to be honest. Yes, Godfrey would definitely cause teasing, at least around here. I also don't think of it as a "timeless classic" (but that doesn't mean it's a bad name). Kids and society are cruel. As a MN, it would be great.

I like it! Sure "God" is in it, but lots of names have inteteresting words involved and do just fine. If it were me, I would use it as a middle name though, just because while I think its cool I know many may not like it was their name, but a middle, awesome! Love that it has family significance to you as well.

Thanks for the reply, I have been trying to think along alternative lines but I think Gottfried with no German connection would be to difficult to explain and I know a truly awful Geoffrey who has put me off the name for life. Maybe the Italian Giotto? My husband (Sean) has forbidden any crazy Irish spellings after a lifetime of misplaced 'h' and 'w's. Also I'd still prefer Godfrey. Oh dear.

Many thanks for all the input, maybe we need to go with it as a middle name. Thus the search begins again.
