Thanks everyone for so many great suggestions! You really tried!! They decided to add the Chinese name Lin, which their sources are saying means "beautiful jade." They were REALLY wanting to keep this "jade as a Chinese treasure" thing! They decided that Lin sounds like an American name but retains the meaning they wanted, and have announced her official name: Jennifer Lin Sha Mei.
At the moment they are calling her Mei Mei for short, which sounds like May-May. In Chinese, the "family" name comes first and then the given name; thus Sha in her case is the district where was found abandoned, and Mei is the given name. Also in Chinese, repeating the given name is the family/familiar/pet form of the name.
They seem to be trying to give the name "Jennifer" time to grow on them as well. They are getting mixed reports about whether the little girl is actually more familiar with Jennifer or Mei as her name. In further research and asking adoptive families, they are learning that some children are particularly attached to their Chinese names, and others utterly refuse to be called by them once they go to their new homes. It seems that the family are just going to wait and see what she responds to better. If she hates Jennifer AND Mei, then there is the new given name Lin to call her!
As for Abigail Dawn, it sounds like she really goes by Dawn, and not so much her Chinese name so it's unlikely she would want to use that. Which is good, because her Chinese name is pretty much impossible for an English speaker to pronounce. All of the name combinations work together pretty well: Abigail-Dawn and Jennifer-Lin, Abigail and Mei, Dawn and Jennifer, Dawn and Mei, Dawn and Lin, Abigail and Lin, etc. etc. The family have one daughter at home whose name is Tikvah; and when I think about it Tikvah, Abigail-Dawn and May-May are actually a pretty cute sibling set, not at all matchy or theme but somehow complimentary too.
Thanks everyone for your awesome ideas! Too bad that they didn't take any of them because they were great, but they seem happy with giving their new daughter plenty of options to use.

Just wanted to post an update on this! They girls are finally home in the U.S.A. The family are calling them Abigail and Jen, but sometimes I hear their Chinese names too. They have only been home a very short time so there will surely be a period of adjustment, and probably eventually one or both of the girls expressing an opinion on what she wants to be called. If anyone is interested, you can check out the family's blog here and see a picture of them when they were in China!
