I love Marielle! I have a gorgeous friend named Marielle, so I might be biased but... And Ellie is a gorgeous. I'm not usually a nick name fan, but Ellie is the exception!

Marielle is beautiful. What about Mirabelle Audrey? Your DH could use the nn Mabry.

I think you can easily find a happy medium, where you can honor your grandmother with a variant of Mary but stay comfortably away from the blue-rinse image.

Marissa is an option (most guys like -issa names since they think they sound like hot girls)
    Mariah
    Amara
    Annemarie
    Maren
    Marian (like Maid Marian)
    Mariel (as suggested above)
    Marin
    Marina
    Mariska
    Marjorie
    Marseille
    Martine
    Samara
    Tamar(a)
    Blade, MD

Marielle is so pretty! If you love it, maybe try working on him a bit more... I like that you could get nn Ellie, Marie, or Mari/Mary.
My best compromise suggestion for you is Aubrey since it is in between Audrey and Mabry.
Other ideas might be Maeve, Merida, Elise or Elaine(to get nn Ellie), Opal, Coralie, or what about moving Claire/Claira to the front and using Marielle as the middle name? Good luck! =]
