I think of Don Knotts as Barney Fife on "The Andy Griffith Show." Considering he was decades before my time, I'm surprised how strong the association is in my mind. Fife feels flighty and maybe not too bright, but basically good natured. That's got to come from Barney. I do like Fife's musical meaning, and I like how short and sharp it sounds, despite having soft sounds. Meeting a RL Fife would probably make me like the name more. Right now, I prefer Fifer/Pfeiffer.
I see it as more masculine.----
