I like Toby on both genders, it's a very cute name. I don't think a longer form is a necessity but it's up to you. I also like October, Tobin and Tabitha. I think if you used just Toby you would have to use a more solid middle name like Toby Claudia or Toby Victoria but with Tabitha you could afford a more unusual middle name. You could even do Antonia Belle or Alecto Belle (a 'toh' sound with essentially any middle name beginning with B) with the nn Toby.

I like October as a spunky first name as well. Toby on a girl is NMS but, I think that as long as you used a mainly girl middle name she wouldn't have complications on legal paper.

October nn Toby is kind of genius! I love Nameberry
Tabitha nickname Toby could definitely work! Kitty is a nickname for Katherine, longstanding, but it's hardly obvious.
Also, really like October. If April, May, June can be names, why not October?

LOVE it. Totally awesome on a girl. Adorable and no, its enough to stand on its own. Just give her a more formal mn if you're feeling in need of more. If you have loved that name forever then DO IT. You will be so happy. I debated naming my daughter my long time loved name b/c its been getting really popular. It's Gracie, and I thought do i need to name her Grace eventhough Gracie is the name i really like, not Grace? And you know what, its my daughter, don't know if i'll get another, why do anything less than what i really love for the baby I so love, and so Gracie she is, just Gracie. And it fits her so well. I have zero regrets and am so grateful for that. I think you could definitely have that with Toby. I hate to see people pass on names b/c they think there has to be more or less to them. I hope this helps. It's so cute!

Guess I'm the one who really dislikes it. It would work better as a nickname for something like October or Tabitha. I find it too nicknamey for a boy too, but love it for a nickname for Tobias.
