    Need a compromise

Our 4th baby is due Nov 11th, and my husband and I simply cannot agree on a name if Baby is a boy. I've had Simon or Gideon in mind and love both of these names equally, but my husband dislikes them both claiming that they sound too much like all the other on/en/an names that are so popular these days. I disagree and think they're quite respectable ,classic names. His number one and only name choice for a baby boy is Louis. While I don't hate this name , I definitely don't love it. I do like the nickname Louie however, just not enough to give my baby this name. So I either need to help him into coming around to the names I like, or come up with a whole other name that would make a good compromise with a feel that we both like, but currently I'm stumped.

I agree with you about Simon and Gideon. Maybe if you point out the differences with all the other ends in -n names (nearly all feature the long a sound, nearly all or 2 syllables which is different from Gideon) it will help.

Louis is a great name. What about Lucas for similar sound and the Biblical feel of Simon and Gideon? Louie could still be a nickname (in addition to Luke).

Another thought: Silas. Has the -s ending of Louis and the Si of Simon (and is Biblical, I think - certainly a saint's name).

Those are compromise names for Simon and Louis, but I'm struggling more for Gideon. Gordon? Even though it ends in -n, surely it's too clunky to feel like Aiden et al? I realize it's not everyone's taste but it has a certain charm. Like Louis, it's a bit of a dad name, but handsome. Similarly, maybe, for Gregory?

    So:
    Lucas
    Silas
    Gordon
    Gregory.

    Good luck!

    Lucan maybe? perhaps Silas?
    Also love Lawrence.

If you could tell us why you don't like Louis, or maybe what you like about Simon and Gideon it might be easier to make suggestions. Right now it's a little hard with just three names to work from.
    Leander? Lazarus?
Abel, Simeon, Samson, Graham, Gilead, Macsen/Maxence, Aldous, Clyde/Clive/Claude, Jules/Julius, Caius, Saul, Solomon, Paul, Peter, Quinlan, Monroe/Munro, Rufus, Soren, Sullivan, Oliver, Oscar, Vaughn, Reuben, Ezekiel, Allan, Conrad, Arthur, George, August, Callum, Cedric, Clement, Colin, Cyrus, Dashiell, Desmond, Fraser, Dominic, Nicholas, Tristan, Ellington, Everard, Franklin, Hadrian, Hayes, Ewan.

I love the name Louis pronounced like Louie? As for your boys options, I like Gideon the best! However I do think Louis or Louie is a better option.

    Maybe
Gregory, Sampson, George, Holden, Adrian, James, Jackson, Tolliver, Xavier, Zachary?

How about Lucian/Lucius. I really like Lucius at the moment.

Or, how about Guido in stead of Gideon?

I don't think that Simon or Gideon sound popular at all. I rather really like Simon. It's not used very often, so it's unique, but not unusual. Like Martin. A classic underused name. Simon Louis would be great.

    But what about:
    Seth
    Lucas
    Liam
    Owen
    Noah
    Ethan
    Adam
    Elijah
    Spencer
    Henry
    Isaac
    David
    Joel
    Gavin
    Levi
    Elliot
    Vincent
    Patrick
    Milo
    Grant
    Finn
    Jonah
    Silas
    Max
    Caleb
    Nathaniel
    Felix
    Garrett
These are all names that are similar to Simon. What about Levi?

NAMES SUGGESTED FOR BOTH SIMON AND LOUIS:
    Liam
    Henry
    Oliver
    Owen
    Alexander
    Garrett
    Gavin
    Milo
    Spencer
    Felix
    Vincent
    Nathan
    Max
    Elliot

    NAMES SIMILAR TO LOUIS
    Eric
    Linus
    Daniel
    Quentin
    Cole
    Julian

    NAMES SIMILAR TO GIDEON
    Liam
    Aaron
    Levi
    Finn
    Asher
    Josiah
    Asher
    Oliver
    Caleb
    Felix
    Gavin

There are a lot of repeats on this list, like Levi, Oliver, Caleb, Felix, and Gavin. I got these similar names from the Baby Names Explorer on www.babycenter.com. It's really helpful. You could also plug in Simon, Gideon, and Louis into something like Nymbler. (www.nymbler.com)

I rather like Owen and Levi. Levi sounds similar to Louie, and it's a biblical sounding name that would similar to Gideon or Simon. And I just like Owen.

Food for thought - when I see "Louis" I instinctively pronounce it "Louie." I only pronounce Lewis as Lou-ISS. You probably wouldn't have much of a problem with it, but maybe I'm not the only one who would do this.

I much prefer Louis pronounced as "Louie" so maybe if I focus on that it will grow on me. Or maybe this baby will be a girl and I won't even have to worry about a boy name! Thanks for all the inspiration!
