I'm in Australia, and have never heard Desmond (or any variation) used as an insult. I wouldn't worry about that.
However, being brutally honest, I think Desmond is kind of geeky-in-a-bad-way. Desmond is the middle-aged guy from accounting with bad skin and crooked glasses who eats lunch with Nigel and Winston every day.

Another Australian here who before your post hadn't heard of Desmond (Desi) being used as an insult.
I sort of like it but it feels too heavy/clunky for me, plus it reminds of the annoying protagonist in the Assasin's Creed games and the evil warlock from the Casper & Wendy movie. It just leaves me a little cold.
