Grrr Kardashians
I'm due in a month and we've been planning on naming our little girl Penelope, and calling her Penny. With Kourtney Kardashian's new baby, I'm now hesitant, mainly because the name of their first baby, Mason, went up to the second most popular in th country is year. I'm not sure if that will now happen with Penelope, or if she's even planning on calling her Penny, but I wanted to see what you all thought and get some other name options!
So...our first daughter is Mabel Cecilia Jean, and our last name is a two syllable R name. I don't want to do a double middle name again - I am set for the middle spot on either Louise, Louisa, or just plain Lou after my uncle who passed away. My husband likes Susannah/Suzy, and I like Fiona and Fern. Any other ideas? Should I just stick with Penny? Or should I let the Kardashians win?

if you love Penelope, use it. celebrities can't steal every baby name - Mason is still popular even though he's a kardashian, and we should be happy that not every one of them does something like Apple or Moon Unit. This one isn't so out there that no one would even have used it or heard of it until a celebrity chose it. Penelope is great, and if you love it, that matters a lot.
I like Penelope Lou or Penelope Fern. with the 1st name being such a (pretty) mouthful, it seems like something short fits best in the middle

I posted about this same thread on Monday, since we are using Penelope as well. And, we have come to the conclusion to use the name. These are the main reasons, so I hope this helps you be put at ease
1. Penelope will never be as popular as Mason (Mason started at 30 when Kardashian used it), and Penelope is in the 160's. It will not be a top 10 name just because of a Kardashian.
2. Obviously all of us are really into names, but many people aren't and will not even know that Kourtney used the name, much less who the Kardashians are.
3. Kardashians fame will be over soon. I would be more upset if Angelina Jolie used a name (Shiloh for example) because I feel like that name is always associated with that family. Penelope is not always going to be associated as a Kardashian name. Their 10 minutes of fame will eventually be over, and when our little Penelopes hit school age, they will should be off TV by then (one can hope right).
4. If it is the name you love, use it. You will regret it if you don't.
Hope this helps! I will tell you I was very upset as well on Monday, and it took some help from the berries to take me off the anger edge, so I hope this helps you as well.

If you love Penelope, don't worry about the Kardashians using it. When I heard the name, the only thing I thought was "interesting that she didn't use a K name." I think you should still go for it!

I think if popularity is a concern you should go with Fern Louisa or Susannah Lou maybe. The name is obviously going to rise...it will either be common or it will be "oh like Mason's sister?" I was due when Beyonce was and I was afraid she would use what we were thinking of...luckily no! I just knew it would annoy me & make me stop loving our name if all we ever heard was "oh like Beyonce & Js baby!"
Distinctiveness is important to most namers and I think this name will be the next Olivia.

Well, I am a HUGE fan of Susannah!! But I do really like Penelope!! I don't see Penelope rising in the charts the way Mason did... simply b/c Penelope has an old world sophistication that in my opinion appeals to more specific people, rather than Mason's more "pop culture" appeal. Sure it may rise a few numbers on the charts. but I don't think your child would be one of several in her class.
If your heart is set on a little Penny, stick with it!
