    is Charlotte an "ette" name?

I like Charlotte, Juliet and Violet and although they end with the et sound i don't lump them with the ette names like annette, lynette, bernadette. is this silly? are these names, especially charlotte really ette names??

I consider them -et names because they end in an -et sound..... so I lump them together. I like a lot of -et names though, my favorites being: Juliet, Minette, Charlotte, Lunete, and Evette.

I know what you mean...I think the difference is that when you pronouce the names you listed, the emphasis is on the beginning of the name whereas with "ette" names like Colette and Anette, the emphasis is on the ETTE.

This exactly. Most of the first names you listed, (even Juliet depending on who's saying it) have stress on the 1st syllable. Names that end in -ette typically have the stress on the last syllable. It completely changes the feel of the name if you ask me.

Personally, I lump Charlotte in with names like Violet, Scarlet, Harriet, etc. Names like Bernadette, Lynette, Annette, Collette, etc are a whole different ball game to me.

Actually, I think I would pronounce Juliet and Juliette different, and I never realized why until now
