What about Nolan? It seems to fit your style and sounds nice with Matthews.

Pretty sure Noah is in the Top Ten right now? It's a boring choice with Matthews IMO. Neither name is bad but together? Sleepy.

Roland Matthews - Favourite. Uncommon first that isn't hard to read or explain and isn't made up.
Noah Matthews - Pleasant but dull. There are other similar names that are not so common.
Brandon Matthews - Overused, kinda dated.
    Trent Matthews - Very '80s.
Drake Matthews - Better than Trent or Brandon.
Ewan Matthews - Are you saying it Ew-an or You-an? I don't mind this one but Owen might flow better.
Sawyer Matthews - Big fan of Lost?
Kai Matthews - I like Kai best as a nickname but this isn't that bad.
Seth Matthews - The repeating "th" doesn't do much for me but it's okay.
Ryder Matthews - Trendy, occupational, a random y. Not a big fan.
Grayson Matthews - Grey/Gray I like, mostly as a middle, Grayson doesn't do much for me otherwise.
Silas Matthews - Like, second favourite after Roland.

Roland and Silas stand out from the rest as high-quality, IMO. Drake and Kai are the next best options. Noah is okay if you discard the whole caring about uncommon names thing.

Honestly I don't really find any of the names you gave suggested particularly unique. I do love Roland, nn Rollo. I also quite like Noah but its really popular at the moment - #5. The rest of the names really aren't my cup of tea - sorry. I think there are much more interesting names out there that are much less popular. Here are a few ideas that capture that 'safe/popular' feeling I get from your list but which are a bit more unique. I hope they will help you think up some names that will mean your boy stands out a bit more than John! In no particular order:
    Roderick
    Nathaniel nn Nate
    Nyle (pn Nile)
    Benedict
    Edmund
    Edwin/Edwyn
    Tait/Tate
    Tristan
    Deakin
    Hugo
    Owen
    Duncan
    Soren
    Sully
    Sutton
    Jasper
    Rowan
    Ronan
    Graeme nn grey
    Gregory nn grey
    Granger
    Grover
    Rynn
    Ryland
    Ridge

    Good luck!
