Because of the Cain & Abel association I'm averse to the name but I do like the sound of it (feel the same way about Delilah)
Caine, Cane, Cayne, Kayne, and Kane are alternative spellings

She asked for opinions, and that's what people are giving. You can disagree without shutting down differing views

I'm not even Christian and I know the story of Cain and Abel. I would think it's unfortunate to give me child a name that I know so many people could associate with fratricide.

It doesn't bother me, and I actually really like the name. However, I don't live in a bubble, so these types of reactions give me a realistic expectation of what is to come if I chose the name (I also like the Kane spelling).

It just depends on what you are prepared to deal with--maybe not outright. Most people wouldn't be rude enough to say something to your child's face, but some will think it, I guess. The association, unlike pop culture references, isn't going anywhere for a long time.

Cain is a name that most people, even non-religious people, associate with a murderer who killed his Brother. To Christians the name is also synonymous with anger, wrath, jealousy and deceit. I think it would be a lot to impose on a kid even if it sounds nice to you and the meaning isn't a problem. If I met a Cain I would assume the parents didn't bother to find out what it meant because it's association is so overwhelmingly negative that I can't see how anyone who knows the history of the name would use it.

I know a Kane and to unchurched ears it has a nice sound but if you know the Biblical story then the name becomes totally unusable even if your small knit group is either ignorant of blase about it there will be mulititudes who will think "shock horror" and that would be so unfair on an innocent child.

I personally don't have a problem with it..it has a strong sound to it, but a sweet spelling.. Yes, there is the negative connotation to Cain in the bible.. but honestly, its fine..look at other biblical names/stories.. Jonah ran, David..messed up alot too..Delilah was a temptress..the list goes on.. I don't know if you're husband is going for it for the biblical reason or not, but my point is, no one, except Jesus, was totally perfect. Bascially, every name does have a 'flaw' behind it.. In my opinion, don't be afraid to use it. Besides, I think when people would meet him, they would see him as who he is personally. While they may think of the connection, they might not say anything.. Canaan would be a good compromise.
