I agree that Beatrice is better as a middle name than a first!

I think Naomi Beatrice is a lovely name. I've never really stopped to think about the name Naomi before, but I've just decided I love it.

dearwatson, I think so too. I can imagine a real lady wearing it--it's bold and feminine and intelligent looking. I'm hoping you'll use this in the end, even though I know the hubby favours Beatrice.

Regarding your Emerald question, I used to love the beautiful Esmeralda. However, now I'm a lot older, I find I really like Emeraude. It's got that smart, literary, bold thing going and I don't know, street cred? Makes Emerald/Esmeralda seem Disney-ish by comparison. What do you think?

Update: I haven't gotten any further regarding winnowing down the large list we've got, (the British Baby Name lists are extremely helpful!) but I can say that a 3 or even 4 syllable name is wanted. Our surname is 2 syllables, so I think it is possible.

@etoile: Emeraude is certainly interesting! Though I can't say I favor the harsh ending, but regardless it is going on the list! You have lovely suggestions.

@allthatglitters: Romilly is pretty and unusual, I like it! I picture a smart, confident woman when I hear Eliza, and I like the historical backing Cordelia and Guinevere have but not really their sound.

@catielynn: Adeline, Emmeline and Clementine are lovely!

@ribbons-and-soldiers: these names are a bit weighty, compared with Jasper or our other boy names (saving it for the future!). They are what I'm looking for theoretically but feel too heavy for a person.

Others I was going to throw in the ring:

    Noemi (Similar to Naomi)
Beatriz / Beatriu (other variations of Beatrice that I really like.)
Esme (since you like Emerald, and someone suggested Esmeralda)
    Antonia
    Clarissa / Larissa
    Tamsin
    Elise
    Marina
    Elspeth
    Renata
    Nora / Eleanor / Eleonora / Leonora
    Miriam

If you decide to use Beatrice in the middle, just don't use Gemma as the first. (Or do, and seem how many Alighieri fans catch the reference. Literary humor -- hope it helps lighten the mood of finding the right name. Best of luck!)

Katarina/Caterina, Irena, Silvia, Aniela, Delfina, Raffaella, Apollonia, Cecilia, Pasqualina, Rosalind/Rosina, Josephine, Allegra, Alba, Leokadia, Annunziata/Nunzia, Bronya, Adrasteia, Vincenza, Althea, Eurydice, Regina
