    Thoughts on Garrison?

I like the name Garrison, but I don't want to shortened to Gary (my father's name). Does every name get shortened in school? What would be a suitable nickname if one was needed to stop the Gary nickname? What do you think of the name in general?

I'm pretty neutral on Garrison (I'm really just a G name snob..lol). I really wouldn't want him to be called Gary either. Maybe Sonny as a nn? Are you using Garrison to honor your dad? I have a nephew named Nicholas (he's a junior) that has been called Nicholas almost exclusively since birth..however, he started kindergarten last year and definitely writes his name as Nick instead of Nicholas. He said.."it's so much easier" lol.

I like Garrison. I know several guys named Harrison, which is very similar, and they never get called Harry. I don't see why Garrison would be called Gary unless he asked to be.

I don't like Garrison, sorry. I am just not a fan of -son names much, or names that begin with G. Garrison reminds me of the word 'garrulous'.

I much prefer Harrison to Garrsion. Garrison just makes me think of Mr Garrison from South Park.

I'm not a fan of Garrison as a name. I just think of it as a military term for a body of soldiers stationed in a particular place.

Garrison is a nice name, not my style, but nice, I can understand not wanting to have Gary as a nickname but maybe you could go with Rhys as a nickname (gar-"Rhys"-on)

I think of the military. A garrison is a fort/camp. I'd think you were a military family or the NRA "it's my right to bare arms" type. But if you told me he's named after a Gary, I'd think "how sweet". Not my style but it's cute for a little boy and will age well

I wouldn't intuitively shorten Garrison. If you don't shorten it others won't either

Thanks everyone! It would be in honor of my father, but I'm still not sure.
