    Maude

Let me just start by saying I know. I know Maude isn't the most popular name on here. I know not everyone likes it. I know a lot of people hate it. I know many think it's old-lady-ish and harsh sounding. I know people think it's ugly.

I know these things, and it's not that I don't care or that I don't hear the naysayers. It's just that, well- I kinda love the name.

So tell me, (honestly but kindly, please), is Maude really all that bad?

A little Maude would join big sisters Willa, Cora, and Sybil.

Here are two pretty cool girls named Maude that I hope will make you like, or at least appreciate, the name.

    1) Judd Apatow's daughter Maude:

    2) Design Mom's daughter Maude:

    Thanks!

I love Maude! It used to be on my list of things to name twin girls. I like that it's a little old-ladyish, but I think it's starting to be very stylish and even a little waspy (I remember seeing in Martha Stewart magazine a few years ago some article on a holiday party she was having at an employee or friend's house, and their teenage daughter was named Maude). I think we're going to start seeing more Maudes soon. I think it sounds lovely with your other daughters' names as well.

You are not alone. I love Maude too. She's clunky and old-fashioned, sure, but I think that's part of her charm. Not too long ago people would have said Beatrice, Edith, and Agnes were ugly and old lady, and yet there are many Berries who would fully endorse those choices now.

Maude will be dusted off and ready for a revival very soon. Why not be ahead of the curve? Not to mention she goes great with Willa, Cora, and Sybil.

I don't think it's horrible but I wouldn't use it myself. It reminds me of the show Maude in the 70's, and the character was played by Bea Arthur, so it automatically makes me think of her. I prefer Maeve, which is sort of similar to Maude. But I do think Maude goes well with your other daughters names and if you love it you should use it!

I want to like it but I don't. I can see the vintage charm but the sound of Maude is just not appealing to me at all. I don't dislke it because it's "old lady" - I like some of those names.

However, Maude's a good match with your other kids' names. I think Maude sounds best with a longer, somewhat frillier middle name. - Maude Caroline, Maude Alexandra, that sort of thing.
    Shannon

Sorry, but I just hate this name. I find it completely unattractive and it reminds me of mud. I love the names you have used for your daughters, especially Sybil. I think Mae would fit in great with your other children.

    I like it.
Maude and Cora in particular just sound so right together IMO. Yeah theres the Bea Arthur association, but I'd love to see Maude get some fresh life.

    Well articulated, Sarah .

Genuinely admiring your taste in names.

Maude would fit right in with your trio!

I adore vintage names -- particularly the quirkiest, spunkiest ones like Sybil and Maude.

Design Mom's name choices are all inspiring: Ralph Wallace, Maude Emma, Olive Jean, Oscar Stanley, Betty [no middle] and Flora June [http://www.designmom.com/about/].
