Weird names thread - back to square one!
Okay, so after over twenty pages of replies (
! ), I think I've got a much better idea of what I want in a name. I THOUGHT I had "THE" name twice. When I started the thread I thought it was Marigold, but then I kept getting all these bad connections and signs and associations with it, then found out it's the name of a main character on a new NBC sitcom in the fall, so that was out. Then after I discarded Marigold I thought for sure the name was Opal, which I loved for its sparkly rainbow qualities and the crusty old lady factor, but then a friend of mine pointed out that opals are considered bad luck and harbingers of death, especially if it's not your birthstone, which it is for me since I'm born in October, but this baby girl isn't going to be born in October unless she's significantly premature, which of course nobody wants!
So here's what I want/need in a name. I want a word name that's not in the top 1000. I love nature names, like flowers and jewels, but I know they're trendy, and I don't want anything super trendy that will be dated in a few years. I do like a little bit of old-lady crust on a name, but it's not essential. I don't want a name that just "means" something in another language, it has to be an English word with extremely strong imagery.
The imagery I love and want to evoke in at least one count is:
* beautiful green fertile magical nature, like a meadow full of deer and gnomes and flowers
* sparkly twinkly rainbow glittery stardust (I know I'm ridiculous)
* the ocean, with its transluscent blue-greens and creatures both real and mythical (like mermaids)
I will almost definitely not use a "B" name, as our last name starts with "M" and "BM" is a pretty common term for poop. I don't like light, vowely names - for example, Azalea is a nice flower name but too vowely and light for me. I also don't want something that will probably lead to a nn that is extremely common or blah. Before this pregnancy, I loved the name Clover for years and years, but now I feel like it's too close to uber-popular Chloe and the name itself is starting to attract too much attention as well.
Here is my current list, in random order, though most of them are on it just as inspiration and I don't feel like "THE ONE" is on there.
Moonstone
Starling
Bunny
Cinnamon
Begonia
Magenta
Frostine
Ginger
Ursula
Strawberry
Topaz
Amethyst
Aquamarine
Crimson
Zelda
Luna
Honeysuckle
Prairie
Pixie
Galaxy
Ocean
Seaflower
Moonflower
Snapdragon
Here are some names I'd only consider for middle names because even I know they're too crazy for a first name
Stardust
Shimmer/Glimmer/Glitter/Glow
Starlight
Silverbell
Snowflake
Snowdrop
Moonbeam
And, since you've all endured me this long, I thought I'd let you know the name of my middle son (you can find the name of my oldest in the old thread) - Wolfgang. I love the Germanic heaviness of it (and that in Germany now only old dudes are named this), I love how it leads to the nn "Wolfie" (which is what we call him) or "Wolf" but it's still a legitimate name, I love how strongly masculine it is. But it's a totally different style from my oldest son's name, and from my youngest son's name, and from the style of girls' names I like as well!
Anyway, let me know what you think!Last edited by betsy buttercup; June 27th, 2012 at 01:24 PM.

I do agree with you on Crimson and Ocean definitely being boy names, and I can see your point on Starling (which was a boys' name in the 1800s) and maybe even Galaxy (even though it's a "Gal"), but Cinnamon? That's a girl for sure! You don't think Snapdragon is masculine? What would a nn be for Snapdragon?
Morningstar is neat but I don't like "Morning" which sounds the same as mourning. I think Cricket is cute as a nn, and I like Liberty a lot actually but I think it's too popular and my DH wasn't into it. I put Lilac back on my list, even with my first son's name also having the "Lie" sound, just because it was my favorite the first time around (tied with Violet, which is now way too popular).

Starling-I actually kinda like this one
Cinnamon-I like Cinna quite a bit
Begonia-Not sure I like that this begins with beg
Magenta- I like, though Maggie would be the obvious nn
Ginger- not bad
Ursula -Interesting addition
Amethyst -Amy
Aquamarine -This would definitely lead to Mari nn (Marin, Mari, Mara)
Crimson -pretty
Zelda -just makes me think of the video game, and I've never even played it
Luna -definitely getting common now
Honeysuckle -I think Honey or Honeybee would be better, I don't think using Suck in a kids name is a good idea
Prairie -I like this one too!
Pixie- I actually kinda like this
Galaxy- All I can think is Lax
Acacia Fern Meadow Sunlight Almandine Forsythia Midnight Sunrise Amaryllis Freesia Moonbeam Sunset Apple Gardenia Primrose Swan Aspen Hyacinth Posey Tansy Camellia Island Prairie Tempest Caraway Iris Rainbow Timber Carnelian Lilac Sunflower Tulip Cayenne Lake Saffron Violane Cloud Lark Sequoia Waterfall Coral Maple Skylark Wind Cypress Magnolia Spring Dahlia Moonlight Echo Last edited by kala_way; June 27th, 2012 at 01:30 PM.

I have to say I enjoy the imagery you're trying to evoke with your girl's name and I wish you luck. It's imagery that I find beautiful as well. I don't know that I have any suggestions for you that weren't mentioned in the previous thread, either by myself or someone else but I will keep your new guidelines in mind and if I come up with anything I'll be sure to let you know.

I actually think Glow could work as a first name since there are people name Flo....
Anyway, I'll try to avoid repeats, but there were so many names/words mentioned already, that is going to be hard.....
