How about Primeveire? It's french for Primrose. It's totally unheard of, but has a very soft sound. It's pronounced "PREEM-ah-vair".

Hi there. Don't give up! My naming choices are totally different - much more traditional/conservative and very British so I thought it might be useful for you to see what I think are 'usable'. Here is my short list from other berries suggestions:
Oona - I do like this strong sounding name and it's a bit old ladyish too
Hebe - I really like this a lot actually - a good strong name with some oomph but also a pretty flower that is often purple(a nod to Violet) and is thegreek goddess of youth
Cricket - this is cute and could be usable - maybe better as a mn or nn though
Tansy- I really like this one too, natural, feminine but with strength in the 'T'! Also a lovely bright yellow little flower that is part of the Aster family.
Aster - this is lovely
Ginger -but only if there is some red hair likely!
Coral - I haven't heard many Corals around and it's got the nature and ocean theme - just don't pair it with Reef as a mn!
Reef - this is a good strong ocean name for a boy
Gusty - a less popular name in the same vein as the more popular Gus but with some strength behind it - good for a boy
Lumina - means light but is not too light sounding
Starla - not my favourite but could work for a girl
Rue- I have this on my list for second names but it's becoming a popular name thanks to The Hunger Games
Juniper - could work for a boy or girl
Sage - probably a bit too popular for your tastes!
Clover - I do think you should reevaluate this one as its such a natural choice
Opal - in the middle ages opals were believed to bring good luck. The associations with bad luck only came after sir Walter Scott's novel and are fictitious
Myrtle - this has crusty old lady in spades
Laurel - this does too
Pepper - very cute
Ianthe - this is a really beautiful name, but I don't know if it's a well-known enough word for you
Mirabelle - very pretty and goes with your fairy stardust theme
Celeste - also very feminine and heavenly
Hart- I'm planning to use this as a mn as its my mum's maiden name. It also means a male deer
Indigo - rather popular but very useable and with a good strong 'o' sound
Meridian - this one is growing on me with the nn Merry
Hazel - nature and crusty old lady all in one - perfect! The strong 'z' should tie in nicely with your sibset too
Ostara - this has a real English name feel
Zinnia - as does this one
Olympia - but it is the Olympics this summer so not sure...
Elva - I think this one is really beautiful but might not be a recognisable enough word for you
Juno - I like the strong 'o' sound in this too and I don't think it's going to be too popular
Summer - a lovely evocative and wearable name
Olive - a nice word name twist on the popular Olivia
Viola - this is a lovely choice and harks back to Violet, which you really liked
Some ideas from me that I think can work as names without being too too out there:
Plum
Aloe - probably better for a boy
Calla
Ammi - a little white flower
Carlina - the genus for thistle
Flora - cant remember if this was already mentioned but it's such an obvious choice given your criteria
Ixia - the Latin for lily
Muscari - the full name for the grape hyacinth - a very pretty deep blue/purple flower
Perilla - a herb/spice from the mint family mainly, and a potentially very cute name
Blythe - this name puts me in mind of a sunny breezy day that makes people smile
Lea - another word for meadow
Melody - a bit different from your criteria but evokes the same feeling
This is my first post on nameberry so I hope these ideas might help

Thank you so much for your opinions! Ginger, yeah little to no chance of red hair. I'm probably not using Ginger anyway, it just doesn't seem special enough. Coral is very close to Cora, and Cora and Nora and Dora are starting to be trendy here. That's why I'm avoiding Flora, too, even though I do like it and it's not yet caught up to the other ones. Laurel, I knew a Laurel and so it doesn't have that nature association for me, I just think of the girl I knew. Myrtle is crusty old lady, but I just think turtle. It would be cool to meet a little Myrtle though! Pepper I do like, but IDK, it just seems like more of a nn, and makes me think of the musical "Annie" (it was one of the other orphan's names). Hazel I like but it's too popular. It seems so funny, too, because I remember when Julia Roberts named her twins Hazel and Phinnaeus a few years ago everyone was like, "WHAT!?! She's CRAZY!!!!" And now, probably mostly due to the starbaby effect, both of those names are pretty normal-sounding (well, maybe you don't hear Phinnaeus that much, but Finn and similar names like Finley and Flynn are super popular, you even hear them on girls sometimes). The "z" in Hazel wouldn't be too much for my third son's "Z" name, but Zinnia might be. I do like Zinnia a lot but I don't think I want two "Z"s in a row. Indigo is cute, but even though you only ever hear it on girls (and it's not popular there even) I still think of most color names in the blue spectrum as boyish. I do like Elva but it's so close to popular Ella. If I could go back and change my first son Eli's name, Elvis would be a guilty pleasure pick! And I am keeping Juno on the list, for now.
Greenapple, Pearl used to be one of my top three favorite names. Before I started having kids, I was sure I'd have three girls named Violet, Clover, and Pearl. Pearl was going to be the sweet youngest child. But now Pearl is getting so stinkin' trendy; it's top 500 already and with all the celebs who've picked it as a first or middle name within the past year or two, I bet in five years it will be in the top 100 or close to it!

Second post quoting you clarec147! I have gone back since yesterday to reevaluate the three names I already "picked" - Clover, Marigold, and Opal. Clover I'm definitely done with. It's just too darned close to super-popular Chloe, hits too many phonic trends, and now Clover itself is getting way too much attention from celebs and other people. Sadly, for me, Clover's over! Marigold has too many personal bad omens attached to it, and even my own non-superstitious sister said "this is just too creepy, you can't use it now." Then there's the matter of the NBC sitcom coming out in the fall with a character named Marigold. That's sure to make Marigold at least as popular as Magnolia (which I know isn't charting yet but it's getting close, and I know it sees a ton of attention on nameberry), which is too popular for me, plus I don't want people thinking I named the baby after the character since the baby will be born a few months after the show starts. It looks like a stupid show and might not be on that long, but still, it's weird. And the name seems like bad luck for me and my family anyway.
Which brings me to Opal. I discovered, I actually really want Opal back! I did see a lot of stuff about that Walter Scott novel being the source of the bad luck rumors. It seems like before that there were rumors of them being tied to evil and witchcraft, which I don't really care about. They also say the diamond merchants of Victorian England were seeing opals surpass diamonds in popularity so they encouraged the rumors. Fine, whatever, that seems about right. Then there was some thing about a Spanish king getting an opal ring as a wedding present for his wife from his girlfriend, and then she died then like half a dozen other wearers of the ring died, then the king wore it and he died. But there are individual "cursed" gemstones of all varieties. We all know about the Hope Diamond being cursed, but that doesn't mean we think all diamonds are bad luck.
The thing that keeps really bothering me is the whole "Opals are unlucky unless you were born in October" thing, or "Opals are unlucky if you got them for yourself." These rumors are persistent but don't seem tied to anything specific in any of the limited research I've done. We definitely "got this baby for ourselves", and she's not going to be born in October. I was born in October, but my husband wasn't, and neither were any of my three sons, so does that mean the baby would be "bad luck" for the rest of the family? And would she even be bad luck for herself?
I know this is all ridiculous, but it just makes me feel too antsy to really go for the name until I can clear all this up to my satisfaction! Luckily I have a lot of time!

I can't help with this. I am concerned that everyone is going to think that your baby has druggies for parents, though! Be careful!

Wow, you guys must be really superstitious..... I don't believe in bad luck, I've survived many Friday the 13ths and some of them were even lucky! I wouldn't toss out Opal because it's "bad luck".... it just seems silly. There are people who are named Opal and I'm sure nothing bad has happened to them. Then again I don't believe in curses and magic and stuff either, and this is all just my opinion....
Here are some other gemstone names since you liked Opal:
Azurite
Beryl
Citrine
Garnet
Jadeite
Nephrite
Kyanite
Kunzite
Lazuli
Albite
Peridot
Tanzanite
Topaz
Zircon
QuartzOur Cats:
Calcifer & Mittzy
