    Welcome to Nameberry, Olive!

    My recommendation is ...

    01. arWAN [5 letters]
    02. roWAN [5 letters]
    03. stELLA [6 letters]
    04. zoELLA [6 letters]

... a sibset comprised of two 6-letter names ending in "ella", and two 5-letter names in "wan".

I really like Kieran (or the more traditional Gaelic Ciaran) and Declan. I think Kieran Fox and Declan Jude would be fabulous!

    Good luck!

To attempt to answer the question you've posed: I think boy's names are hard because we're a little less sure of what we want our sons to grow up and become......It's easier to imagine anything at all being possible for a daughter, but most of us are more hesitant to embrace softer outcomes or professions for guys, such as stay-at-home dad or poet. We might accept this outcome, but most of us wouldn't aspire to it for a son. In other words, the options for daughters seem wide, wide open in a really positive way, but we're a little less sure of how the range of options for sons is expanding. This is very opinionated, I know.....but think about it: the world's prisons are mostly filled with millions of men--another outcome we don't exactly aspire to for our sons. I think it's harder to come up with a "golden mean" type of name for a guy. (I think it's been pretty well documented that parents take more risks naming daughters, and are more willing to go with creative choices for girls.)
