Midnight - like a lot but for a boy
Silver - like a lot, but maybe too unisex, and like Cohen it's maybe more of a last name in my area, which has a large Jewish community (I'm Jewish, husband is not)
Sunglow - pretty but don't like the nn Sunny
Fawn - cute but 70s and not enough "wow" factor
    Rainbow - beautiful but cliche
Glimmer - love but for Hunger Games, also like Glitter and Sparkle, but realize they're not the best names
Turquoise - so cool, but for the nn Turk, which just makes me think of the doctor on Scrubs or a turkey
Reverie - pretty and like it on that blogger lady's twin baby, but not so much for myself, and don't like Rev as a nn for a girl

Any more comments on the names I put up on my list for now? I'd really appreciate any feedback. Oh and whirligig, yes, I think you're the first one to put up a list where they're all way too crazy even for me!

Some of these really made me laugh (in a good way!), e.g, Carrot, Ferret, Mango . . .

Thought of a couple others, not sure if they've been mentioned:

    Season
Anemone (love the flower, loves how it looks written, though a bit of a mouthful for sure)
    Fennel
    Burgundy
    Cypress
    Cardinal
    Claret

DAMMIT! Marigold was the top name, and I just was talking to my sister about the death connection to it, and she was like, shut up, that's stupid, then she googled people named Marigold and the only person she found was Marigold Churchhill, Winston Churchhill's fourth child (this is my fourth child) who died of an infection before she turned three. My sister was like "Wow, I'm not superstitious and that's too much even for me, you've got to cross it off your list." Now I'm LITERALLY at square one! After pulling out all my hair naming three boys, which got harder every time, I can't believe that naming a girl is actually more difficult for me!

Gee, this has a fairy tale quality to it, like a spin on Rumpelstiltskin. Has there been a single name that you've actually liked?

Marigold was the name I really really loved, but there are too many bad vibes going with it now! Even my no-nonsense sister told me not to use it, and she really liked it too, said she was going to "steal" it for herself when she first heard it. Otherwise I did put up a list on page 11 of what I'm currently considering, but I don't think any of them are THE name.

Kind of embarassed, looks like at least one of the site creators now knows I've completely lost my mind!

My name has a lot of "bad vibes" connected to it, too and it's never caused me any trouble - I don't think Marigold would have any issues.

Hahaha, well, this is an enormously entertaining thread and there have been a lot of amazing names offered, but it's kind of bedeviling that there isn't a single one save Marigold that even seems to mildly appeal. A couple of issues I wonder if you've considered:

    1. Word names are by definition trendy, even if they're obscure.

    2. Gender identity seems to be a sticking point -- you don't like anything that might even theoretically be unisex, yet you also don't like anything decidedly feminine.

Here's my choice for you: Hero.

Hero is a long time love of mine, I adore it - I definitely suggest this one, too.

I feel like all word names aren't necessarily trendy, I think it's more that they're becoming widely acceptable for the first time, and so they seem to be more of this time than ever before. Does that make sense? I do think that flowers and gems are trendy. I DO like feminine names, I think Clover and Marigold are very feminine. I just don't like those names that seem to be groups of soft vowels, predominately "a"s, strung together by mostly soft consonants, like Aviana or Azalea or even Plumeria, which was on my list because they smell beautiful but it's just not heavy enough. I like a chunky name, like Clover, the "Cl" sound is kind of thick, as is the "ver" part, and nothing is heavier than "gold." Did you see my current list that I posted on page 11? I'll put it back up here:

Moonstone - beautiful but not feminine enough for a first name

Gardenia - the "gard" sound is just masculine in my mind

Starling - like it but don't love it and husband doesn't like it at all

Bunny - it's got the "B" thing going against it (my last name starts with "M"), and I think I kind of agree with the nameberry entry on Bunny saying, "is it enough of a name for your daughter?" If I was pregnant with twins I think Bunny and Pearl would be an adorable twin set alternative to my original set idea of Clover and Pearl, but I'm not sure any of those names really stands out for me on its own

Cinnamon - cute but possibly a stripper name

Begonia - don't have enough of an image of begonias to love this one, plus the "BM" objection with our "M" last name and it doesn't sound that great

Magenta - "Madge" is not a good nn, and "Genny" is commonplace

Frostine - perhaps way too much in this country, and maybe even too froo froo for me

Ginger - cute but kind of commonish, and the whole redhead association and this kid is probably not going to be a redhead

Ursula - don't dislike the sea witch association, but fear the Disney association makes it too dorky

Meadow - cute but too common for me, considering as the middle name to a flower name

Strawberry - cute but I get caught up on the "straw" part not being that great

    Frost - middle name only

Starlight - pretty but a strip club

    Moonbeam - cute but insane

Zelda - too close to my youngest son's Z name

Luna - like but think it's too trendy

Honeysuckle - love the flower, don't love "Honey" as a nn or "suckle"

Prairie - cute but I don't think I like it enough

Pixie - cute but maybe not on an adult, and it's semi-similar to my last name

Silverbell - very very pretty and seasonally appropriate most likely, but "bell" is so trendy

Hero is most definitely a dude's name to me. Shadow is cool but it's too creepy.
