    We're stuck - please vote! Hugo / Victor / Xavier / Leonardo / Lucas / Gabriel

Not much time left, and we still haven't decided on a name for our soon-to-be-born baby boy. We have one boy already, named Diego.

Love Gabriel! It's a recent crush of mine, and Diego and Gabriel are great together. I think Gabriel Hugo would be fabulous!

Whatever you do, just don't do Victor Hugo.

Thanks for all the replies so far -- the baby may be born tomorrow and we still have no idea ...

Middle name can be whatever (we are thinking Santiago goes well with many of the first names on our list) but it's the first name that is really causing us angst. We definitely won't do the combination of "Victor Hugo" though, too much to live up to

I voted my 3 favourites, Hugo, Victor and Gabriel. The only one I really dislike is Xavier.

However, with Diego (which is so sweet, by the way) I think Hugo may be a bit much, and Victor is a very different style to me. So only given one choice, I'd go with Gabriel.

    Oh, and congratulations!

I love Gabriel but voted Hugo to go with Diego. For some reason I like the matchy O endings with this combo. I wouldn't use Santiago (a cool name BTW) with Hugo though.

    Good luck!

Ha! My attempt at a literary joke.

    Gabriel Santiago would be lovely!

Thanks for all the votes, and the comments -- it's interesting to hear your thoughts, keep 'em coming! I will be showing the mama-to-be today, who knows she may be reading this thread on her iphone from the delivery room as we wait, and wait, for things to get going. Maybe this little guy won't come out until we decide on a name :-)

Here are some of my thoughts on each name:

Hugo: I like it, but I wonder if a Diego and a Hugo is too much "go" in our boys' names; and my mother-in-law is not crazy about it (means less to me than it does to my wife, although this is also my wife's favorite name); another plus, this is one of those names that nobody can give you an unintended nickname (at least not by just shortening the name).

Victor: I like it, but our last name is a sort of harsh, one-syllable name, and Victor strikes me as a somewhat harsh sounding name too, because of the "v" and the "ckt" and the "r" sounds are all strong sounds; it probably goes better with a softer last name, imo. But it works well in multiple languages and my mother-in-law loves this name, so it is on our short list. The nickname "Vic" is, well, it just is. We wouldn't use that, but I'm sure many people would.

Xavier: this was my contribution, I always thought this was a cool name; it might seem a little too much for a baby or a very little kid, but hey he could grow into it, right? The downside is the multiple pronunciation issue, but otherwise, I really dig this name. The nickname Xavi isn't bad either.

Leonardo: another one of my contributions, truth be told I'm not crazy about Leonardo, but I really like Leo (but for cultural reasons, we probably wouldn't name the kid just Leo, so we'd be stuck with Leonardo and using a nickname ...

Lucas: this is OK I guess, I like Luke much better, or even Luca, but again, cultural/linguistic reasons mean we would go with Lucas, which neither one of us is crazy about, at least compared to the other options, but it was on our list so I wanted to see what you all thought.

Gabriel: sometimes I really like it, sometimes I really don't; it's kind of cool, but I wonder whether I would just be setting up this boy for 18 years of teasing with a name that sounds somewhat feminine and also sounds it an easy target for teasing for other reasons; and let's face it, boys can be brutal with each other. So it's a dark-horse possibility, everyone in our family kind of likes it a lot, maybe not #1, but up there

(Incidentally, in our weighted-voting within our close family, Xavier came out first, followed by Hugo/Victor tied for second ... didn't exactly help us make up our minds though!)

Thanks again for all your input and your votes!
